El Yanqui, the Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) student newspaper, documents the history of the college from the 1950s through the 1970s. The newspaper covers student activities such as sports, academics, and social life, and documents the physical growth of the campus, such as construction projects and new buildings. El Yanqui includes articles and photographs describing visits and speeches by notable campus visitors, including authors, artists, scientists, politicians, musicians, and Civil Rights leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Eleanor Roosevelt. Created for students, by students, the MPC newspaper reflects student attitudes about the topics and issues that affected them during these turbulent decades, including Civil Rights, women's rights, the war in Vietnam, and environmentalism.
